Captured in 1933 by Elias Churchill, the thylacine was donated to the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania, Australia. An astonishing find for science, since the last known sighting had occurred three years previously and the unfortunate animals washout and killed by a local farmer.
The Thylacine's death comes as an especially bitter note for conservationists, who only 59 days previously had secured official government protection for the species. Though the hunt for more of its kind continues, hope is looking slim.
