Reddit Moderator In Charge Of Feminism Forum Believes In "Men's Rights"

Allegedly also a dude. Awkward.

If you already know all about Reddit and the ViolentAcrez controversy with Gawker, feel free to skip on down. For everyone else, here's the quick and dirty:

Reddit is a forum where volunteer community moderators work on forum threads divided into topics (sub-reddits). ViolentAcrez was a community moderator with his hands in a lot of pies, including a forum called "CreepShots" where his job was to cull any girl that looked over the age of sixteen. This is skeezy behavior and Gawker called him out on it. Reddit reacted poorly. Then they banned "CreepShots" anyway and went into PR spin mode.

This story comes from one of the leaked internal conversations between the Reddit staff and Community moderators about how to handle all this unwanted media attention.

Meet Demmian

Meet Demmian

This is the most active moderator of Reddit's Feminism forum, who many in the Reddit community believe to be a man. Which in and of itself would not be a problem. Plenty of men are feminist allies and should not be excluded from the conversation. It only becomes a problem when, for all intents and purposes the "head" moderator of a women's forum, has opinions like this:

Source: reddit.com

The above screenshot is from a leaked private thread. In essence, Demmian is saying doxing, which is slang for having your real identity outed on the Internet, is a worse offense than taking photos of underage girls without their knowledge and sexualizing them on the Internet. Because people are going to do it anyway, so you might as well not even bother trying to change things.

Not content to just use this damaging evidence, Buzzfeed dug deeper into Demmian's history with the site. It's not pretty. While we couldn't find how people know Demmian is a man, the consensus is prevalent among power users.

You can read about his rise to power in /r Feminism HERE.

Stephen Colbert To Cameo In "The Hobbit"

I am Middle Earth and so can you. Sometimes it pays to be friends with Peter Jackson.

Artist Rendition By Buzzfeed's John Gara.

Stephen Colbert gave an interview to Playboy for the November issue, in which the subject of Middle Earth came up. Apparently last year, Peter Jackson invited Colbert to New Zealand to watch a twenty-five minute cut of The Hobbit and generally geek out over walking around on location.

Then on Saturday Hollywood Reporter got confirmation from an anonymous "knowledgeable" source confirming the cameo.

For anyone wondering if this is a strange mash-up of genres, Colbert is a huge Tolkien fan, and even speaks Elvish.

Beluga Whale Mimicked Human Speech For 30 Years

Parlor trick or first contact? Scientists believe it was the latter.

Via: dailymail.co.uk

At least one Beluga whale may have been trying to make first contact with humans.

Until his death five years ago, the male Beluga known as Noc had been in contact with scientists at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego for 30 years. The leader of the whale study, Sam Ridgway, believes the only reason for Noc to go out of his way would be an attempt to cross the species language barrier:

Our observations suggest that the whale had to modify its vocal mechanics in order to make the speech-like sounds. Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact.

Pictured above is the special device researchers built to record Noc's ramblings, along with Noc clearly "speaking" into the listening device.

Are battery-operated accents breaking into the mainstream? The Makey Awards might not be the Oscars, but I bet this trend starts cropping up on the red carpet.

Project Runway alumni and "tech wearables expert" Diana Eng was called in by the World Maker Faire to help design a futuristic theme for the ceremony.

With the help of zombie make-up artist Jessica Jade Jacob, Eng created light-weight, easily hidden, battery operated LED prosthetics that were fashion forward.
